School-building projects in the Philippines

by Bong Pedalino

The provincial government has set aside P50 million budget readied in a one-is-to-one counterpart scheme for any funding that will be poured into the province for the Department of Education (DepEd), especially in its school-building projects.

Lately, however, it was determined that the education department appropriated P25 million, so the provincial local government unit readily put up a similar amount, said Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Atty. Teopisto Rojas, chairman of the SP Committee on Education.

Rojas made the disclosure yesterday during the weekly radio program Media Forum live at dyDM.

The total amount of P50 million shared equally by the province and DepEd will go into school-based projects that will be implemented next school year, Rojas said.

In a related development, Rojas also disclosed that the provincial School Board passed a resolution authorizing the release of half a million pesos for assistance to schools all around the province, including Maasin City.

He noted that in the past, the city was not included in the distribution of education funds from the province, but under the leadership of Gov. Damian Mercado the city was taken in since it is a component city, where its resolutions and ordinances are still subject for review by the SP.

He cited the Maasin Central School as one of the recipients of the provincial assistance to schools, another was Guadalupe National High School, where it got P 30,000 to purchase musical instruments for its school band.
