Baguio City Police Office

The tourism oriented police (TOP COP) of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) rescued a family as their boat capsized in the Burnham Park lagoon at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

This was learned from Vivian Dingcoy, a caretaker of the boating concessionaire at the area, who said that the family vacationing here from Tugatog, Malabon, Metro Manila fell into the water at the disembarking site of the lagoon.

Dincoy said the TOP COP headed by Police Inspector Virgilio A. Hidalgo were able to fish out all the four members of the family at the edge of the lagoon, and brought them for check-up at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC).

Rescued were Julian Villanueva, the father; Leonida Villanueva, his wife; Carlos, son and Gilian, granddaughter.

BGHMC said the family members suffered no injuries.

Dincoy said they settled the matter with the family and paid some P11,500 for the damages. Many of the family's personal belongings like cellphones were wet by the freak accident.

Hidalgo said that based on police investigation, the family hired a rower identified as Nathaniel Dimacol.

After an hour of boating at the newly-dredged lagoon with a depth of 10 feet, the family decided to disembark in order to see other sights in the city.

It was at this period when Dimacol jumped into the disembarking pier, rocked the boat which eventually caused it to overturn.
