The Philippines congratulated Xi Jinping on his assumption as President of the People's Republic of China.
"The Philippines extends its sincere congratulations as Mr. Xi Jinping assumes the presidency of the People's Republic of China by means of the 18th National Congress and his election as General Secretary of the CPC (Communist Party of China) Central Committee and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission," said Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda in a statement Thursday.
Lacierda said China viewed the assumption of Xi Jinping "as an auspicious moment as they work towards their prosperity and stability."
"This is a sentiment shared by all peoples of good will, who look forward to opportunities for positive engagement fortified by trust, good will, and cooperation, for the mutual benefit of all peoples in our region and around the world," he said.
Lacierda said the Philippines "will seek all opportunities to help build a climate of mutual trust and cooperation to enhance stability in our region so that the positive economic momentum of our respective nations may be sustained."
Xi Jinping was named President of China Thursday after a vote at the nation's parliamentary meeting in Beijing, four months after he took charge of the ruling Communist Party.
