Free Kayak Program in the Philippines

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) offers a kayak program that aims to develop and enhance leadership skills. The program is open to both corporate professionals and youth groups.

"This is not just a recreation program. This is a leadership development program using kayak as a tool. With all the beautiful and rich marine biodiversity and potential islets in Cebu, there is no reason for us not to have this kind of water activity," Anthony
Terence Ocampo, KAC deputy director for Professional Programs, said.

A kayak program will last for three to four days, wherein participants will be navigating and paddling to the sites covered by the route, like the islands of Olango, Pandanon, Caohagan, Banakon, and other islands between Cebu and Bohol.

The program will test the endurance, patience, teamwork, and communication and planning skills of the participants, as well as how they respond to changes in the environment.

The 52 tandem kayaks donated by Outward Bound Singapore will be utilized in the kayak program, which is preferably conducted during the second or third quarter of the year to avoid bad weather conditions such as typhoons and monsoons.

The head facilitators of the kayak program are Ocampo and Sheerene Abrea, KAC Professional Development Programs facilitator, who are both certified with Kayak Coach Level 1 by the Singapore Canoe Federation.

To ensure the safety of the participants, the KAC facilitators conduct Risk Assessment and Management System (RAMS) before every expedition. They follow operating procedures and standards from medical to rescue and program design, which
are internationally benchmarked.

The program's pilot group is RAFI's Micro-finance team, who kayaked from Om Shanti, Cordova to Shalala Beach, Pangan-an and Caohagan Island last July 14-17, 2011.

"The program helped strengthen our teamwork as we cooperate with each other and focus to reaching our destination. I felt secure with several colleagues who know how to handle the kayak and the KAC team boat that followed us along the way," Nineveh MascariƱas, finance supervisor of RAFI Micro-finance, said.

KAC is one of the programs under RAFI's Leadership & Citizenship focus area, where future leaders are nurtured to prepare them to take an active role in affecting change. RAFI's other focus areas are Integrated Development, Micro-finance & Entrepreneurship, Culture & Heritage, and Education.

Plunder case against Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella

Visayan Daily Star - The plunder case against Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella is serious since the Department of Justice has endorsed it to the Office of the Ombudsman, Save Bacolod Movement convenor Romy Niere said yesterday.

The DOJ endorsed to the Ombudsman on Sept. 24, 2009, the plunder case filed by the Philippine Sports Commission against Puentevella for appropriate action, for the solon's failure to liquidate funds of the Bacolod Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee.

The endorsement copy was signed by Assistant Chief State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon.

Niere said the endorsement copy received by the PSC on Oct. 8 means that the DOJ having found merit on the case, is asking Ombudsman Merceditas Guttierez to conduct an investigation and prosecute Puentevella on the alleged fiscal mismanagement of BASOC funds amounting to P50.5 million or even more.

PSC commissioner Eric Loretizo said that as pointed out earlier, no amount of explanation by the BASOC will compel Niere to admit his false accusations, lies and deceptions, or, stop maligning BASOC officials.

"Sadly, too, he put words into my mouth in an attempt to drive a wedge between me and PSC Chairman Harry Angping, whom he had asked to probe my supposed act of clearing Puentevella in the plunder case filed against him by the PSC," he said.

Loretizo said Niere also claimed that he has accused the PSC chairman as a "vindictive political leader". Niere, standing pat on his new calling, only shows here his expertise in sowing intrigues and twisting facts to fiction, he said.

She pointed out that Go denied he operated the theater showing the alleged obscene movie.

Mining Issue in the Philippines

Today, we have ended our two-day Solidarity Mission here in MacArthur, Leyte. I have been with Goldman Environmental Award 2012 recipient Fr. Edu Gariguez (Executive Secretary of CBCP-NASSA) together with the Social Action Centers of the Archdiocese of Palo and Dioceses of Calbayog and Borongan.

We have weighed the pros and cons of the issue on magnetite mining in the ricefields of MacArthur. We have talked to concerned regional representatives of national government agencies, the academe and the community of Lake Bito in Barangay Villa Imelda, MacArthur town in the province of Leyte. We have visited the almost two-month old barricade and slept in the barricade with the community.

Today, the newly installed Archbishop of Palo (Leyte) Most Rev. John Du, together with some priests visited the mining site and the barricade. Archbishop Du lamented: 'My heart bleeds'.

We are now requesting all of your organizations to send an urgent appeal to MGB Director Leo Jasareno and DENR Secretary Ramon Paje to visit Lake Bito as soon as possible due to imminent danger to the fishery and rice farming livelihhoods posed by magnetite mining. This appeal is due to the fact that the community has lost trust and confidence on the regional representatives of DENR and MGB, who are acting as 'lawyers' of the mining company.

Kindly send your urgent appeal/letter to MGB and DENR today or tomorrow.

The details of our Solidarity Mission is described in the following Press Release, and next is the letter of Mr. Jesus Cabias to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.

I humbly hope for your favorable and immediate response and action.

Sincerely yours,
Rodne (Alyansa Tigil Mina)
