Jobs in Iloilo

Iloilo offers abundant opportunities for job seekers in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry and property developers for the information and communication technology (ICT) industry.

Joeven Tansi, executive director of the Iloilo Federation for Information Technology (IFIT), said there is a need for additional infrastructure support with more investors eyeing Iloilo as their hub.

Last year, he said three investors signified their intention to establish a hub in this city.

Currently, there are two available sites ready to take in BPO companies- the Plazuela de Iloilo at the Diversion Road in Mandurriao district and a building that is owned by Alfonso Tan along Quezon Street at the city proper.

He said they have also inquired at the Ayala Hub in Mandurriao district if they could provide additional IT hub.

Megaworld Corporation, once its development is completed, will augment the necessary infrastructure support needed to respond to the growing BPO locators here.

Currently, Iloilo plays host to six call centers, one animation services and seven others that specialize in web content developer and real property processing, among others.

BPO companies also remain as one of the top job generators in Iloilo. Last year, Tansi said close to 6,000 were employed by BPOs. With the increasing need for workers, he added that they have to augment their talent pool in Iloilo from other provinces.

Sapong said the application forms are now available at the Provincial Comelec Office at Capitol Compound, Pagadian City or may be downloaded from www.comelec.gov.ph, the official website of the Commissions on Elections (Comelec).

This absentee voting privilege is contained under Resolution 9637, which outlines the rules for early voting for security authorities, poll watchers and other government employees and members of the media, Sapong said.

The media practitioners include the following: print journalists, television journalists, photo journalists, online journalists, radio journalists, documentary makers, and television/radio production staff.

Sapong said government officials and employees including the military and police who are duly registered voters are allowed to vote for national positions only such as senators and party-list representatives in places where they are not registered, but where they are temporarily assigned to perform election duties on Election Day as provided under Executive Order No. 157 and Republic Act No. 7166.

She also said media members availing themselves of absentee voting will be able to vote only for national candidates like senators and party-list.

"You can vote only once," she said citing "the penalty is harsh for those who will vote twice."

Media voters shall vote in the Comelec office where they filed their applications to avail the local absentee voting, she said.

The media entity or corporation to which the applicant is employed should also provide a certification that the applicant is a bonafide employee and may not be able to vote due to the performance of his functions in covering and reporting the conduct of elections.

Production of biodegradable plastics out of sugarcane

The ban on the use of plastics in packaging here did not discouraged the Sugar Regulatory Administration to urge entrepreneurs to venture in the production of biodegradable plastics out of sugarcane.

In her recent visit here, SRA Administrator Maria Regina Bautista-Martin said products out of sugarcane should not be limited to sugar alone but to biodegradable plastics, bio-water, bio-ethanol and cogen.

Sugarcane can also be used for producing paint, cosmetics, textile, among others. Coming up with other products other than sugar can help boost the value of sugarcane in the market, she stressed.

Diversifying sugarcane production, according to the official, can help cane planters and millers survive the impacts of lower tariffs on subsidized imported sugars come 2015 and beyond due to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Free Trade Agreement (AFTA).

Producing biodegradable plastics made from variety of plants such as corn, sugarcane and switchgrass is considered nowadays as the "clean" alternative to petroleum-based plastics.

In other countries, the use of biodegradable plastic has established a market and the demand on environment-friendly packaging are projected by experts to grow through the years.

But in this city, the use and sale of any kind of plastics is prohibited pursuant to City Ordinance No. 562 otherwise known as Plastic Ordinance effective November 23, 2012.

Last December, Oliva said the city sent demand letters to about 3,000 real property owners.

The letters helped the city raise its collection to P258.3 million last year, an increase of 103 percent from 2011.

Establishing a cooperative for jeepney

Instead of putting them in jail Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is mulling establishing a cooperative for jeepney 'barkers' whose presence is prevalent in almost loading and unloading areas of the city here.

This was in response to the move of the Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (ICLAJODA) urging the local policemen and the traffic office here to strictly enforce the city's "anti-barker" ordinance.

"Barkers" in exchange for assisting public utility jeepneys (PUJs) pick passengers are given P5 to P10 for every trip. However, the ICLAJODA currently, complains that "barkers" are already getting bold even threatening drivers should they refused to give the amount.

They are earning as much as P700 a day, according to ICLAJODA.

Mabilog said that he wanted "barkers" organized so that a livelihood project will be provided to them instead of just staying in their current state.

He said that putting them in jail is never a solution because once they get out they will still go back to their old work.
