NPA Leader Arrested in Negros

A suspected member of the New People's Army (NPA) in southern Negros Oriental was sentenced recently to life imprisonment for murder.

Calixto Vistal alias Cocoy was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt for the murder of Basilio Casido who was executed allegedly by the suspect and some accomplices during an ongoing barangay session last May 07, 2009 in Tayak, Siaton town, according to a report of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army based in Siaton.

The three-minute reading of the decision came last Friday morning at the sala of Judge Roderick Maxino of RTC Branch 32.

Vistal was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt and was given the maximum punishment of "Reclusion Perpetua" and ordered payment to the victim's direct heirs Php 100,000.00 in civil indemnity and moral damages.

The family of the late Casido broke into tears upon hearing the court judgment.

"He got what he deserved. They took the life of my father for reason that he worked for the peace and order of our barangay", Merlyn Casido, daughter of late Basilio Casido, was quoted as saying.

Lt. Col. Marion Sison, commanding officer of the 79th IB based in Siaton, describes the court decision as a "success in the unit's legal operation efforts integrated in its Bayanihan Team that helped facilitate for the pursuance of the case".
