The Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative has drawn a development plan focusing on the improvement of power lines to better cope with the power demand of big businesses in the province.
The five-year development plan was a result of the strategic planning that the Inec management conducted, having in mind the expanding business centers in the city and around Ilocos Norte.
Inec board president Rey Lazo said the plan involves replacement and improvement of existing power lines and the building of more sub-stations in the city.
"Our power lines are now 40 years old, they need to be replaced," he said.
Lazo said Engr. Renato Balintec, Inec general manager, has also presented a plan to loop Inec's power grid to neighboring northern provinces of Cagayan Valley and Isabela so that Ilocos Norte could have an alternative source of power supply when other energy sources in the southern sections are not available.
"If you notice, when there's a problem in the line in the southern part where we get our supply, we are affected. That's why there is a plan to loop our lines with Cagayan and Isabela so that we can have an alternative source if lines beak down from South," he said.
Lazo said the establishment of a new sub-station in Barangay 1 in this city is under study following the entry of big supermarts like SM Savemore and Puregold and the factory depot Wilcon.
"There will be a surge in power demand because of these big firms and we need to address that. The development plan will be our response to that demand," he added.
Meanwhile, Inec is drawing up another plan to open more communication lines for the benefit of consumers.
