MANILA, Jan. 23 (PNA) -- After 114 years, Bulakenos remain proud of their province as the birthplace of the 1st Philippine Constitution and the 1st Republican Government in Asia.
This was gathered from interviews from various sectors in Bulacan during the inauguration of the 1st Philippine Republic at Barasoain Church Wednesday
It was in Barasoain Church where Gen. Emilio F. Aguinaldo inaugurated in February 23, 1899 the 1st Philippine Republic also known as 'Malolos Republic'.
Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr . was sent by President Benigno S. Aquino III to represent him and delivered his speech.
"It is here where our first Congress was created," Bulacan vice governor Daniel R. Fernando said. "This is recognized not only in the Philippines but also in Asia. They know that it is here, where we attain our freedom." he added.
Bulacan governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that Bulacan is also a home to many of the country's greatest artists with a good number elevated as national artists like Levi Celerio, composer and national artist; Nicanor Abelardo, prolific composer of Kundiman; Valeriano Hernandez Pena, author of the First Tagalog Novel "Nena at Neneng" and others.
Bernadette Tamayo, 58 OIC assistant auperintendent of DepEd, said she is proud that it is in Bulacan where the 1st Philippine Republic was inaugurated. She added "It is a manifestation of how our ancestors value freedom and independence and their nationalistic effort to establish a government that we can run."
Lovely Jhade Santos, 16, student chairperson of Girl Scout of the Philippines Bulacan School, from San Jose Del Monte National Trade School, said she feels proud that Bulacan province was known also for having great poets like Francisco Baltazar, Jose Corazon de Jesus and other heroes like Marcelo H. del Pilar and Gregorio del Pilar and more.
